What really matters in life is your own wellbeing, which translated to everyone’s wellbeing.

The definition of GDP is “a monetary measure of the market value of all the final goods and services produced in a period of time, often annually or quarterly”. This leads to an economy that is out of control, which has the purpose just to serve itself. People have been removed from this equation.

We live in new times and it’s the right moment in history to redefine what growth means, and why it is necessary.

Humanity and its fundamental wellbeing have to be at the source of the definition of growth. I was watching a short video on the Gross National Happiness, a concept that was initiated by the previous king of Bhutan (link below).

In my opinion, this is a much more compelling offer.

So, what does all this have to do with Industrial Design?

If the intention is to design products just for the benefit of “the economy”, then we will continue on the same path, which will lead to some type of catastrophe.

Or, we redefine the goals, the GDP, and design for wellbeing, and we all aim for a brighter future.

Which path will you pick?
